Dumfries is the largest town in South West Scotland with a population of around 31,600.The river Nith flows through the town and separates the Old Burgh of Dumfries from the Old Burgh of Maxweltown. One of the bridges over the Nith is the Devorgilla Bridge (above) named after Lady Devorgilla the mother of King John Balliol, dating from 1432, is the oldest surviving multiple-arched bridge in Scotland.
On the third Saturday in June every year there is a festival to celebrate Dumfries being a Royal Burgh. This festival is called “Guid Nychburris`” which means Good Neighbours.
Dumfries is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament which is served by Elaine Murray MSP. It is also part of the Dumfries and Galloway (UK Parliament constituency) which is served by Richard Arkless MP .
